The new law on the use of cookies

The new Electronic Communications Act (ZEKom-1) has transposed the amended Directive on Privacy and Electronic Communications (2002/58/EC) into national law.

In the Directive, the Article, which addresses cookies and similar technologies that enable retention or acquisition of information stored on the user’s terminal equipment such as personal computer or mobile device, was amended. Recently, such technologies may only be applied subject to the user's consent.

What are cookies and why do we use them?

Cookies are small text files placed on your computer or mobile device by a website server upon visiting a website. The information is stored to the file in an anonymous form and next time you visit the website, the server recognises and uses it. Cookies themselves do not recognise an individual user, but the hardware used for accessing the website. 
The data saved in cookies is used to improve your browsing experience. For instance, a cookie can remember your choice of anonymous statistics cookies and next time you visit the website, the server reads the information from the cookie placed on your computer and does not ask you again for allowing cookies.   

1st party cookies

1st party cookies are used to remember information about your visit, chosen preferences and settings. They include essential cookies required for running the site.  

3rd party cookies

3rd party cookies are placed on your computer by a website that provides certain services to other websites such as Google Analytics, which can track traffic to a particular website. You can choose to disable these cookies if you wish.
